What's up, my friends! I'm Dr. Titus Chiu and this is The Modern Brain.

In this video, I'm going to be revealing the three key pillars to brain health that are essential for healing your brain.

I work with many patients who have been to doctor after doctor, specialist after specialist, and yet they're still struggling with their brain health challenge.

Maybe they were prescribed medications or they went to see a nutritionist or maybe even an integrative doctor. They might have changed their diet or started taking supplements.

If they are concussion patients, they may have also gone to and tried physical therapy or chiropractic. If they were struggling with anxiety, maybe they went to a therapist and tried talk therapy.

Chasing After Brain Health

However, so many of my patients who I end up seeing are still struggling.

When they come to me, they are just really confused, frustrated and they often feel so discouraged.

They don’t understand why their brain isn’t working or whether it was taking too long for them to heal from a concussion with symptoms like chronic headaches, migraines, or anxiety.

No matter what they tried, even though it might have helped a little bit, nothing gave them any long-term relief.

And so when they come to my office or when they consulted with me online, that was the biggest question and frustration: why didn't what they try work for them?

The amount of energy and time they put into it just didn't pay off so they feel so discouraged and frustrated, pretty much giving up hope if they can ever find an answer to their brain health challenges.

After working with thousands of patients for more than a decade, I realized that one of the biggest reasons why they weren't getting any better even after trying so many different treatments and putting so much time and energy into therapy, pills, supplements, and diets, was this:

Something was missing. Something was lacking from the approach that they were given.

The 3 Key Pillars of Brain Health

Let me break it down for you.

This is your amazing human brain.

It allows you to think, feel, dream, relax, and connect with other human beings. It also lets you create poetry, write novels, enjoy music, nature, and everything in between. But that's when it's working.

When it's not, it could be the underlying root cause for chronic pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia. All of these are symptoms of a long-drawn-out recovery from a concussion.

So in order for your brain to be running on all cylinders and for you to avoid all of the symptoms that I just described, three key pillars of brain health must be in place.

PILLAR #1: Your Physical Brain

The first pillar is your physical brain.

What I mean by that is the physical connections. These are the communication pathways between all your different brain cells, or what we call neurons.

In between those neurons, there are connections and communication pathways that we call neural networks.

It's those neural networks that allow all your different brain cells to communicate with one another.

So if you have a concussion, chronic stress, or even lack of activity in different regions of your brain, the communication pathways in your physical brain become weaker and break down.

That is the root cause for so many of your brain health challenges.

PILLAR #2: Your Chemical Brain

The second pillar of brain health is your chemical brain.

What I mean by that is the neurochemical environment that your physical brain exists in.

You can imagine your brain is like a tree, and the roots are your physical brain and the roots are planted in the soil.

In this analogy, the soil is your chemical brain. So if you have imbalances in your neural chemistry like blood sugar imbalances, inflammation, or toxins, these can dramatically impact the communication happening within your physical brain.

So the second pillar of brain health is your chemical brain.

PILLAR #3: Your Emotional Brain

Finally, the third pillar of brain health is your emotional brain.

That refers to your mindset, the way you look at the world, your thoughts about yourself and the people around you, as well as how well you handle stress.

Things such as emotional traumas, or chronic prolonged periods of mental and emotional stress or even our own inner critic and negative thoughts can really impact your emotional brain.

And so the third pillar of brain health is your emotional brain.

Recap

There you have it, the three pillars of brain health:

  1. Physical Brain

  2. Chemical Brain

  3. Emotional Brain

In order for you to get long term relief from any of your brain health challenges, whether it's concussion anxiety chronic pain or insomnia, all three pillars must be addressed.

And so that's one of the biggest mistakes that I see my patients make.

When they are struggling with something like a concussion, many of my patients have been to a physical therapist for therapy, some of them even tried chiropractic treatments or some other type of neuro rehab.

These approaches might have left them feeling a little bit better, but they always end up in this roller coaster of feeling good on some days and then other days, they don’t feel good at all and have no idea why.

Guess what? Treatments like physical therapy, occupational therapy, or chiropractic treatments work on your physical brain.

They help to strengthen the communication pathways between the different brain cells.

But if the emotional brain wasn't addressed, if these treatments didn't handle their chronic stress, or they didn't have good stress management practices or lifestyle habits built into the everyday life, guess what?

All the work that they did to strengthen the communication their physical brain would go south. They end up in this up-and-down roller coaster.

Another example of patients I work with are those with chronic anxiety. Maybe they went to a therapist and tried talk therapy during the session.

They might have felt a little bit better they felt understood they felt seen and they felt heard, but when they leave the office, because they had massive inflammation in their brain, they might go through this up and down roller coaster again.

This can lead to these patients having breakthroughs (they feel good and empowered), but then the next day feeling really anxious again and they don't understand why they lost control of their emotional health.

The reason for that was because their emotional brain was not the root cause of their anxiety. It was actually rooted in their chemical brain.

So you can see from these examples, in order for you to take control of your emotional health, to recover faster from a concussion, or to really get long term relief from your chronic pain, migraines, headaches, you have to approach it from the big picture.

For long-term recovery, a comprehensive approach that addresses the Three Key Pillars to brain health is a must.
